Peter Matanaj

Family Lawyer

Peter Matanaj is a family lawyer at Pier Law & Mediation. Peter earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Alberta Faculty of Law in 2021, after completing a Bachelor of Commerce (with Distinction) in 2018. He was called to the Alberta Bar in 2022.

Peter now practices exclusively in family law, combining a strong litigation background with a practical, client‑centered approach. He recently moved to BC and was recently called to the British Columbia Bar.

During law school, Peter volunteered with Student Legal Services, gaining early experience in client advocacy and community service. And, in just a few years of practice, Peter has developed a breadth of courtroom and litigation experience that is uncommon so early in a legal career. He articled at a leading criminal defence firm before being called to the Bar. As an associate at boutique litigation firms, he managed complex files before the Alberta Provincial Court and the Court of King’s Bench. This rapid accumulation of experience strengthens his advocacy in family law, particularly in matters involving financial, evidentiary, or litigation‑driven issues.

Peter is recognized for his thoughtful, hands‑on style. He works closely with clients to ensure they feel informed, supported, and confident at every stage. His commitment is to provide clear, strategic advice tailored to each client’s circumstances — whether through negotiation, mediation, or courtroom representation when required. Clients value his ability to combine extensive litigation knowledge with a steady, trustworthy presence. 

Outside of practice, Peter enjoys exploring local restaurants and farmers’ markets, strength training, running, and spending time outdoors hiking and camping. He also values teamwork and community, having been an active member of his law school’s volleyball team.
